Zhiwu
Chen
Professor of Finance
Zhiwu Chen is best known for his study on how different option-pricing
models perform in practice. It is widely cited in academia and
used in practice, where minute differences in valuation models
can become the basis for multimillion dollar arbitrage trades.
Zhiwu has recently developed a sophisticated technique, based
on the science of derivatives, for determining whether stocks
are fairly priced -- a tool, which he is now using for money management.

The Muddled Debate about America's Medical Crisis: Or
Why Overuse of Medical Care Is Not the Cause
by Professor Theodore Marmor
and Kip Sullivan
Over the past half-century, Americans have repeatedly expressed
support in opinion polls for universal health insurance to protect
citizens from the devastating costs of illness. They have favored
as well public financing of universal coverage plans without complex
deductibles, benefit limits, or severe restrictions on their physicians.

The Benefit of Patient Involvement in Medical Decisions

The nature of medical care is changing. The paternalistic
model, in which physicians unilaterally decide which treatment
is best for each patient, is gradually being replaced by an approach
in which patients have an active role in healthcare decisions.

It is a pleasure to introduce the third alumni e-newsletter, and
to share our progress in expanding our alumni services and fundraising
abilities.
Earlier this year I wrote about a reorganization separating Alumni
Affairs from Development. Our intent was to sharpen our focus
on Alumni Affairs with the goals of:
- Strengthening ties between Yale SOM and its alumni,
- Developing new ways to involve alumni in the educational activities
of the school and
- Making the school an unparalleled intellectual and professional
resource for its alumni.
This e-newsletter is part of this effort. It highlights resources,
as well as news and events of interest.

15 SOM students travel to China to discover for themselves,
"How true are the clichés about the Middle Kingdom?"

"Why did you come to China?" This was the often-repeated
question that Chinese students, managers in both domestic and
multinational companies, and even the US Consul General in Shanghai,
asked us during our 15-day trip. Perhaps it was the diversity
of our group that triggered the repetitive question.
