Mass Vaccination May Be Best Response to Smallpox Attack Say Yale School of Management and M.I.T. Sloan Experts
In the event of a smallpox attack, a mass vaccination policy would result in fewer deaths and faster disease eradication than alternative vaccination strategies, reports a new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (article 2827). Dean's Desk
It is with great pleasure that I write to you from the Dean's Desk of the inaugural issue of the electronic alumni newsletter.
This e-news is one of a series of new programs we developed over the summer with the guidance of the Yale SOM Alumni Association Board and the SOMAA. Our goal is to increase the quality of communication and level of services we offer our alumni.
As you know, last year was an extraordinary one -- for the world and for the school. We are in the midst of great changes in society and in business. The impact of September 11 has produced a sharp discontinuity in global politics and economics from the last two decades, and everyone -- governments, businesses, non-profits -- is navigating in uncharted waters. In addition, corporate scandals have undermined our trust in a system we valued as one of the best in the world.

SOMAA News
"They stole our newsletter, and we could not be more pleased." -- Tom Taft, Yale SOM '85, President SOMAA
This first edition of the Global Alumni Network News and Events is one important manifestation of the partnership that has grown in recent years between the independent Alumni Association and the administration of the School itself. Two years ago we saw the need for an electronic newsletter geared to meet the interests and needs of the alumni, and board member, Randall Johnson, undertook the creation and implementation of that newsletter. We are very pleased that the Alumni Affairs office is taking over this effort from us, and see it as a perfect example of the Board identifying a need and the School responding effectively to it.

Admissions News

Thanks to the efforts and dedication of many people, Fall 2002 was one of our most successful admissions recruiting seasons. We received 2,517 applications for the Yale MBA program, up 20% over last year and a new record for the school. Two successful recruiting campaigns helped contribute to this rise in applications. The Admissions Office hosted special events for historically underrepresented minorities and women-both with spectacular results.

Megunticook Scholarship Recipients
Last year, the Yale School of Management launched a new scholarship for students of African American, Hispanic American, and Native American descent. Made possible through a generous gift from alumnus Thomas Matlack. Yale SOM '91, the Megunticook Scholars Program selects two first-year MBA candidates each year who demonstrate a core intent to give back to their communities. The award covers full tuition for the two years of the Yale MBA program. It also provides mentoring for the recipients and an opportunity between the first and second year to spend a week in Boston with Mr. Matlack at Megunticook Management Company, a venture capital firm that invests in promising communication, media and technology companies at the earliest stages of their development cycles.
