Marketing Cleaner Cookstoves

Mushfiq Mobarak, a development economist at Yale SOM, uses experiments in real-world settings to try to understand the barriers to the adoption of beneficial new technology in the developing world.

In one study, he investigated the reasons that improved cooking stoves, which can reduce indoor and outdoor pollution and improve health, have not been widely adopted. He conducted a randomized study in 60 villages in Bangladesh in order to measure the effectiveness of different techniques for increasing demand for the stoves.
