Big Business Versus Obama - Commentary by Jeffrey E. Garten
In the Newsweek commentary "Big Business Versus Obama," Jeffrey E. Garten, the Juan Trippe Professor of International Trade and Finance, writes about corporate America’s criticism that President Obama harbors an anti-business bias. Don’t expect the face-off to last, says Garten, who served in economic and foreign policy positions in the Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Clinton administrations. "After the November elections, I believe the president will seek more common ground with big business," he writes. "Then another part of his DNA will come into play: his pragmatism and his skills as someone who can reconcile differing viewpoints. He will know that a pre-requisite for his reelection in 2010 is more growth and more jobs. With the excruciating pressure to cut government spending, private-sector investment is among his only policy levers, and he will need visible help from corporate America."
