A message from Yale SOM Professor Sharon M. Oster

Posted on: October 23, 2008

To members of the SOM Community:

I have been at Yale SOM for more than twenty years and, though I haven’t done the numbers, I believe I have taught the majority of our alumni either Economics, Competitive Strategy, or Nonprofit Management. After all this time, President Levin has decided it is time for me to practice management rather than simply teach it. I am looking forward to the challenge.

In the last three years, under Joel’s leadership and with President Levin’s strong support, SOM has made a number of exciting changes. We have instituted a new curriculum, developed new programs, hired outstanding new faculty and begun to make plans for an extraordinary new campus. But while much is new, at its core SOM remains, as it was at its beginning, an institution focused on educating leaders for business and society.

In my new role as Dean, I plan to turn enthusiastically to the practice of management, working with the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of the school to focus and advance the many new initiatives of the last several years. I am excited about this new role, and grateful to President Levin for his confidence in selecting me and his continued support for our School.

Sharon
