Matt Spiegel and Shyam Sunder Reunite MGT 948 Alumni

Professors Matt Spiegel and Shyam Sunder organized a reunion and networking event for former and current students of MGT 948 - Security Analysis. Nine alums of the course, now working in the financial services industry, and four current students joined Spiegel and Sunder for cocktails and dinner at the Yale Club in New York City on March 31. All enjoyed the opportunity to review how their investment recommendations had fared over time.

The all time best investment call was made by Eduardo Bello, Javier Fernandez, Peter Lawrence, and Joshua Twilley (all from the class of 2002) who issued a buy recommendation on Providian on December 3, 2001. On that day, Providian was selling at $2.67, and it had lost 96 percent of its value over the preceding four months. The student team estimated the shares to be worth $14.37. On March 31, 2004, Providian closed at $13.08 to yield a cumulative return of 390 percent (compared to -0.26 percent for S&P 500).

John Dusza '03 won the award (Yale tie, of course) for the best pick by a graduate in attendance. He and Brian McNulty '03 issued a buy recommendation on MAF Bancorp on February 13, 2002, when it was trading at $30.70. At $43.27 price for March 31, 2004, this pick earned a cumulative return of 40.94 percent (compared to 0.76 percent for S&P 500 over the same period).

The website carries the recommendations made by the members of the class. Please read the caveat before downloading the reports for fun or profit.
