Shyam Sunder's Spam Study Sheds Light on Internet Legislation

The Yale Daily News (11/14) reported that a study conducted by Professor Shyam Sunder is shedding new light on the debate over the regulation of Internet privacy, specifically unsolicited e-mail, as the House of Representatives considers legislation. Sunder and co-authors Karim Jamal and Michael Maier conclude, "Social regulation may be a more effective tool than legislation in ensuring Internet privacy." Sunder told the Yale Daily News, "All aspects of our lives are not best governed by rules and laws. When we see a problem, it's easy to jump to the conclusion that we should make laws and try to enforce them against undesirable behavior. I'm not sure that is the best approach."
