Yale School of Management Honors Michael R. Bloomberg for Distinguished Leadership in Global Capital Markets
February 10, 2003 - New Haven, CT - The Yale School of Management honors Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, with The Yale School of Management Award for Distinguished Leadership in Global Capital Markets. The event, held in New York City, gathers 50 of the world's leading financiers, finance ministers, and central bank governors for a meeting that includes a discussion on the future of global markets.
In addition to remarks from Mayor Bloomberg, William J. McDonough, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and last year's recipient of this prestigious award, serves as Master of Ceremonies. Jeffrey E. Garten, Dean of the Yale School of Management and former U.S. Undersecretary of Commerce, hosts. Other participants include Yale School of Management alumni Thomas Krens, Director, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Indra K. Nooyi, President and CFO, PepsiCo, Inc.; Nancy B. Peretsman, Managing Director, Allen & Company LLC; and John L. Thornton, President and Co-COO, Goldman Sachs & Company; along with Yale School of Management Advisory Board members Herbert M. Allison, Jr., Chairman, President, and CEO, TIAA-CREF; C. Michael Armstrong, Chairman, AT&T Comcast; Ellen Futter, President, American Museum of Natural History; Reed E. Hundt, Former Chairman, U.S. Federal Communications Commission; and Ira M. Millstein, Esq., Senior Partner, Weil, Gotshal & Manges, LLP. (A complete listing of participants is attached.)
Mayor Bloomberg is the third honoree of the business school's Distinguished Leadership in Global Capital Markets Award. Yale SOM began the award program in 2000 to honor an individual who has had significant impact furthering the efficiency, safety, and soundness of the international financial system. The first honoree was Arthur Levitt, then Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
"The importance of this year's recipient and the arena in which he has been working needs little elaboration. The impact of timely access to global financial information, the effective management of the financial capital of the world, and the need to make sure that all segments of the population share in the benefits of economic growth are just some of the trends that will affect world markets in the future," said Jeffrey Garten. "The Yale School of Management honors Michael R. Bloomberg for his extraordinary leadership in these and related issues," Dean Garten concluded.
Since graduating its first class in 1978, the mission of the Yale School of Management has been to educate leaders for business and society. The school prepares men and women to combine rigorous business skills with a broader appreciation for the economic, social, and political factors that shape the global environment. In September 1999, the school created the International Center for Finance, to focus research on the critical issues facing the global financial community. The Fellows of the Center include not only professors from the School of Management, but also from other parts of Yale University such as the Yale Law School and the Department of Economics. In September 2001, the school established the International Institute for Corporate Governance, devoted to research on how companies around the world can improve their access to international capital markets.
