A gift toward the construction of the new campus
With more alumni in Japan than in any other
place outside the United States, SOM has long been
committed to deepening its relationship with Japan.
Over the years, students from Japan have spanned
many sectors and industries, SOM students have
visited Japan as part of formal and informal study
trips, SOM deans and faculty have visited Japan, and SOM has hosted distinguished visitors from Japan.
SOM is therefore especially pleased that Sumitomo
Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) has generously
committed $500,000 to the future of SOM by
supporting the building of SOM’s new campus.
SMBC’s ties with Yale include two employees
who are SOM students: Osamu Mashiko ’11
and Saburo Yoshida ’10. Mr. Masayuki Oku,
President and CEO, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking
Corporation, said of the gift: “I am delighted that
Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation has
strengthened its relationship with Yale University
and its School of Management. We are pleased
to help make possible Sir Norman Foster’s
vision for the new campus of the Yale School
of Management, which this year welcomed
28% of the class of 2011 from international
locations, including several from Japan and one of our own SMBC employees.”
