Ned Sullivan (Yale SOM/FES '82) President
Scenic Hudson, Inc.

Back

"Yale School of Management and the School of Forestry prepared me for a career in environmental protection spanning the public, private, and not- for- profit sectors. Yale provided me with critical training in key areas -- from finance to organizational skills. But equally important, it inspired me to work to create and change organizations to meet current and future societal needs."

Ned Sullivan is president of Scenic Hudson, a 40-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the scenic, natural, historic, and recreational treasures of the Hudson River and its valley. Based in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Scenic Hudson has a staff of more than 40 working on land preservation, riverfront communities protection, and environmental quality affecting the Hudson River and the region. Scenic Hudson has created 29 parks and preserves encompassing 18,000 acres.

Prior to joining Scenic Hudson, Mr. Sullivan was commissioner of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for four years. Serving as a member of the Governor's Cabinet, he managed an agency with a staff of 400, overseeing pollution control and prevention and land use programs on a statewide basis.

Mr. Sullivan was deputy commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation from 1987 to 1995, overseeing the state's hazardous waste cleanup initiative as well as air, water and waste management programs. He simultaneously served as the chairman of the Environmental Facilities Corporation, a public benefit corporation providing financing and technical assistance to businesses and government agencies in the state. He was co-founder of the Environmental Business Association of New York.

Mr. Sullivan was vice president and managing director at the Bank of Boston from 1982 to 1987. He directed the Project Finance and Municipal Utilities Divisions, assisting government and corporate clients to obtain funding for major capital projects involving energy and environmental facilities and real estate. He served as financial advisor to the secretary of environmental affairs, developing a strategy and legislation to finance the multi-billion-dollar cleanup of Boston Harbor.

Mr. Sullivan has a bachelor's degree in political science and environmental studies from Williams College and master's degrees from the School of Management and the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale University.

He is married to Tara Roberts Sullivan and has two children, Annie and Shirin. He is an avid outdoorsman.
