Eric H. Schultz President & CEO
Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Inc.

Back

"I was fortunate to be part of SOM’s Charter MBA-E Class which were two the best years of my life. This education experience was highlighted by a combination of accomplished and engaging professors and 21 other students each bringing an enormous depth of business and clinical experiences. I left with a clearer understanding of the science behind my previous business experience which proved to be especially valuable to me when leading a health plan through Massachusetts’ healthcare reform and now through Federal Healthcare Reform."

Eric H. Schultz is president and chief executive officer of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Inc., one of New England’s leading nonprofit health plans. Founded in 1969, Harvard Pilgrim and its affiliates provide a variety of benefit options and funding arrangements to more than one million members in Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire.

Harvard Pilgrim is the #1 commercial health plan in America according to a joint ranking of the nation’s best health plans by U.S.News & World Report and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). It is the only commercial health plan in the nation to be named #1 for member satisfaction and quality of care for five consecutive years. Harvard Pilgrim is also the highest-ranked health insurance plan in the New England region in the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 National Health Insurance Plan Study. Harvard Pilgrim received the highest ranking for overall member satisfaction in the New England region.

During his 26-year career in healthcare, Schultz has consistently taken an active role in defining and implementing changes that have led to improvements and greater efficiencies in both the cost and delivery of healthcare. Prior to joining Harvard Pilgrim in March 2010, Schultz was president and chief executive officer of Fallon Community Health Plan (FCHP) for ten years. Under his vision and leadership, FCHP emerged from significant financial losses and transformed from a regional group model health plan into a statewide healthcare services company. Schultz also held executive positions with CIGNA Healthcare, where he oversaw plan operations for Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois, and with Prudential Healthcare where he led its Nashville and Memphis commercial and Medicaid business. Schultz also served as Medical Group Administrator for Nashville Healthcare Group; a 25 physician primary care group practice.

Schultz serves on the boards of the Kenneth Schwartz Center, America’s Health Insurance Plans, the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, the New England Council, and the Worcester Regional Research Bureau. He is past president of the Mohegan Council, Boy Scouts of America, and holds the rank of distinguished Eagle Scout.

Schultz holds an MBA in Healthcare Leadership from Yale University’s School of Management, as well as a bachelor of science degree in biology and a bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of Connecticut. In 2009, he received an honorary doctoral degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Schultz resides in Westborough, Massachusetts with his wife, Kim, and their two sons.
