Marc Buntaine '81 President
Still River Systems

Back

"For me, Yale SOM was a place of empowerment; learning new tools to take on big challenges, but also re-affirming the skills and values I brought — a place of great friendships, of personal learning, and daring to dream. Among other things, I learned a great deal about teamwork and partnering, which have been core values in my entrepreneurial efforts."

Marc Buntaine is an entrepreneur focused on neurological and cancer therapy tools. In 2009, Marc became president of Still River Systems, after joining the company as founding CEO in 2005. Still River is dedicated to commercializing a lower cost proton beam radiotherapy device for cancer treatment. Having now completed product design and development, the company is currently building the first of 15 new clinics designed for its proton therapy system. Leading hospitals from around the world have partnered with Still River to support the development of this new technology.

Previous to working at Still River, Marc co-founded and directed the growth of three companies in neurosurgery and cancer care which are now divisions of publicly traded medical companies. In 1999, Marc founded Zmed, and directed its product development and market growth until 2003, when he sold the company to Varian Medical Systems. Previous to this, Marc co-founded Surgical Navigation Technologies (SNT) and led its growth from early stage developer to market leadership of Image Guided Surgery (IGS) applications and then sold the company to Medtronic. Previous to SNT, Marc helped launch Elekta, a major neurosurgical supplier, from an early stage.

From 1986 to 1988, Marc was a consultant at Bain and Company. Prior to that, he was a manager in corporate finance and the strategy group at Cummins Engine Company from 1981 to 1986.

Marc has an MBA from Yale SOM and a BA from New College of Florida. He lives in Sherborn, Massachusetts with his wife Catherine, also an SOM alum. Marc is on the board of overseers at the Museum of Science in Boston and is active in local arts organizations.
