Primary Care Clerkship Requirements and Options for Yale Medical Students

The curriculum and class schedule for MD/MBA students are especially demanding, and it often is challenging for students to find time to complete the Primary Care Clerkship requirement prior to graduation.  We’ve listed the requirements and options here so that joint degree students can plan accordingly.

  1. Students must complete at least 12 full clinical days at an approved out-patient clinic or practice, and 15 of our primary care workshops.
  1. Students in the local program are assigned to a clinical site each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and attend workshops on Tuesdays and Thursdays, for four weeks.
  1. Students who choose to go to an Away Site at an out of town location are free to schedule their clinical days in any manner that is acceptable to their supervising physicians. Most students attend an away site daily for 3-4 weeks. However some students have attended Away Sites for as long as a year, usually while in a foreign country. Students who go to Away Sites can complete 15 workshops when they are on campus. They are welcome to attend these during a single rotation, scattered through the year, or during ICM in March when the workshops are offered in the late afternoons. Away Sites must be approved by me prior to the start of clinical work.
  1. Students can also meet the clinical requirement by attending HAVEN, the student run Free Clinic, on 12 Saturdays.

Complete information and request forms for the above formats will be found at the PCC website in Blackboard. Students should feel free to contact Dr. Fred Dr. Haeseler, Director for the Primary Care Clerkship, with questions about the PCC.
