Students at Yale SOM are encouraged to work together in a cooperative and supportive manner. To encourage such an atmosphere, the school does not compute grade point average or class rank.

Grades are intended primarily for internal purposes. Grade records are not released to potential employers or others outside the School, with the exception of the grade of Distinction.

Nonetheless, students are held to rigorous standards at Yale SOM. Student performance is graded on a four-point scale. Two grades (Distinction and Proficient) indicate proficiency in a course and two (Pass and Fail) reflect nonproficient work. Students must receive proficient grades in a majority of their courses to graduate. See the Yale SOM Bulletin for more information on academic requirements.
