Federal Stafford Loans
All U.S. citizens and permanent residents may take out Federal Stafford Loans up to $20,500 per year. Stafford loans have a fixed interest rate of 6.8%.All Stafford Loans are either subsidized (the government pays the interest while you're in school) or unsubsidized (you pay all the interest). To receive a subsidized Stafford Loan, you must be able to demonstrate financial need.
| To apply for a Stafford Loan, please submit the following after January 1, 2010 to the Financial Aid Office: | ||
| 1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Submit on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Have your results sent directly to Yale (Yale University Code: 001426). It will take the processor 3-4 weeks to send your results to Yale. | ||
| 2. Copy of Your Signed Income Tax Return for 2009. When the FAFSA and tax return are received, the Financial Aid Office will contact you about completing the application process for Federal Stafford Loans, and will also provide information about borrowing the Federal Grad PLUS loan and private loans. | ||

Private Education and Federal GradPLUS Loans
Private and Federal GradPLUS loans are based on the borrower’s credit history. All U.S. students and international students who already have a U.S. Social Security number and a credit history in the U.S. should obtain a personal credit report and resolve any problems before applying. The following credit-reporting agencies can provide personal credit reports.
